In the middle of the Phoenix Metropolitan area, Tempe Town Lake represents an oasis where the abundance of water contrasts with the general desert-like landscape.

Tempe Town Lake is not a natural lake, but rather a man-made- lake, an artificial perennial reservoir in the City of Tempe, Arizona.

If this is an artificial lake, where does the lake get most of its water from? The Colorado River supplies the reservoir with its water, which is channeled via the Central Arizona Project, a diversion bringing water to central and southern Arizona.

In 1989 after Tempe implemented the Rio Salado Master Plan, but the plan for this type of environmental project was in the making for two decades. This project eventually made the artificial lake a reality.

On July 20, 2010, a portion of the west side of the dam that contained the water in the lake collapsed sending a flood of water into the Salt River, draining the lake. The construction began on August of 1997.

By June of 1999 water started flowing into Tempe Town Lake, and by July 14, the lake was full. The lake opened to the public on November.

The surrounding Tempe Beach Park and it connects to the five miles (of paths for bicycling, jogging or in-line skating around the lake.

Rainbow trout fish and other species are found in the lake, including largemouth bass, yellow bass, tilapia, carp, channel catfish and bluegill. Fishing in the lake is allowed with an Arizona fishing license.

After 20 years, Tempe Town Lake has become a favorite destination for locals and tourists alike, and Arizona’s second-most visited public attraction.
