(Phoenix, Arizona) — Are you thinking about writing a book? Here are some questions and tips that will hopefully inspire you to get started and motivated in your writing and publishing journey.

First, who will read your book?

Think about your reader, who are they? When you are writing a book, answering this question will help you determine who your audience is as well as your market. Knowing who your targeted audience is, will help you write more specific to their interests. Is there a specific age group, gender, culture, language, social issue, need, etc. that you want to address?

Tip: Think about and research other books that have already been written in your subject matter. What makes your book idea stand out from the crowd?

Writing a book? How to come up with an effective title

This is important when you are writing a book because you want to make sure you choose a title that has not been used before. You want to stay away from cliché and repeated titles.

Tip: Use keywords in your title and subtitle. Translation: Use words that are used to look up specific topics on the internet that describe your future book . For example, if you’re writing a memoir and it covers Latinos, poverty, the 60s, a specific town, city, or state…try to incorporate those into your title or subtitle. One great title/subtitle that I can refer to is Cecilia Esquer book: The Lie About My Inferiority, Evolution of a Chicana Activist. For me, the two most important keywords of this title are: Chicana Activist. When a potential buyer looks up the keywords “Chicana Activist” on Amazon, Cecilia’s book is on the second page! Page one is the goal!

Last tip: Cover, cover, cover! The cover is to a book like location, location, location is to real estate. Make sure your cover is going to perk your potential reader’s interest. I can go into detail about the cover, besides the fact that I love designing them; their importance is crucial and a great cover is the first step to a sale. Reason behind this is that we are attracted visually to things; therefore, attraction is half of the sale.

Below are a few other questions that will hopefully help you determine your publishing path while you are writing a book.

1. Where are you at in your writings?
2. What is your genre? Who is your audience?
3. What is the goal for your writings?
4. Is self-publishing for you? If so, what areas do you feel you will need help with?
5. Is 2019 your year to publish your book?
