Phoenix, Arizona - On Wednesday, April 25, 2012 –two years since SB
1070 was signed into law by Governor Jan Brewer– U.S. Supreme
Court justices heard legal arguments about Arizona v. United States,
a lawsuit filed by the state of Arizona to unblock key provisions to the
law. Justices are expected to announce their decision sometime in the
month of June. Carlos Garcia, Director of Puente Arizona, was
interviewed by Barriozona Magazine to get his impressions on what
the justices might decide.

Carlos Garcia - “So we’re expecting the Supreme Court to make the announcement soon
and we’re expecting this announcement to not be favorable to our community. What we’re
doing is preparing our community to fight, to continue to stay here, organize, develop ways
to defend themselves and be prepared because the possibility of them being detained is
going to be more imminent. What would become a custom for Sheriff Arpaio and maybe some
[police] departments like the City of Phoenix is doing, is now going to be spread state wide
and it’s going to be required, even Arpaio and the City of Phoenix are going to intensify their
efforts. So we’re preparing our community; we know the [justices’] decision may not be
favorable but we know we are in the right side of history, we know we’re going to be
organized and get through this together.”
